ACCPAC Celebrates 25 Years

PLEASANTON, Calif., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ACCPAC International, Inc., a subsidiary of Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA - News), this month celebrates its 25th anniversary. The milestone marks a passage from the company's early days of small business computer automation, with a single, computer-based ACCPAC® general ledger accounting program, to its current span of award-winning small and mid-size business (SMB) management software that includes accounting, customer relationship management (CRM), human resources, manufacturing, warehouse management, and e-commerce. Along the way, the products and the company have been at the forefront of innovations in SMB computing, accumulating product awards and other industry recognition for excellence.

ACCPAC President and CEO, David M. Hood, has led the company since 1999, establishing the ACCPAC name in the CRM market and others outside of the traditional accounting market in which ACCPAC was founded.

"Accounting software today has a very different role than it did in the early days of small and mid-size business automation," said Mr. Hood. "Accounting is no longer a standalone entity -- it's the veritable heart and pulse of the business through which other business applications, such as customer relationship management, human resources, manufacturing, and warehousing must integrate to provide even greater business benefits. ACCPAC has evolved to provide these expanded benefits with new business applications that are tightly integrated to the solid accounting foundations that ACCPAC was built upon."

From its beginnings at Basic Software Group in Vancouver, Canada, in the late 1970's, ACCPAC has evolved to continuously tackle business complexities in a changing technology landscape. It was acquired in 1985 by Computer Associates, which went on to acquire other accounting titles, including Bedford Software's Simply Accounting® in 1988. ACCPAC International was established in 1996 as an independent subsidiary of Computer Associates and undertook a series of acquisitions to further expand its product portfolio and geographic reach. The most recent acquisitions include products for accounting and manufacturing (SBT), CRM (eWare) and Point-of-Sale (AGS ePOS), as well as business operations in India, South Africa, Australia and Ireland.

"New technologies become mainstream, and are eclipsed, very fast," said Hood. "Five years ago, hosted systems were infants. Now they're established. Ten years ago, it was the Internet. Fifteen years ago, client/server computing. Twenty years ago, local area networks. Twenty-five years ago, PC based computing. ACCPAC has been an innovator every step of the way. ACCPAC CRM(TM) is a great example, providing customer relationship management functionality tightly integrated to the back office accounting system, while at the same time operating as a Web and wireless gateway for related business applications."

One of the most crucial issues that businesses face today, and ACCPAC is aggressively addressing, is freedom of choice in technology selection.

"Freedom of choice is of ever increasing importance for businesses making automation decisions," said Mr. Hood. "Businesses don't like being locked in to one way of operating; they want options. That's why we've brought ACCPAC to Linux®, to the Web, to wireless devices, and to the hosted services model. Businesses can't lose when they have strong, stable products to work with, and the freedom to deploy them how they want, when they want -- without being locked into any particular vendor's infrastructure. Providing our customers with freedom of choice will continue to be a driving principle at ACCPAC."

Today, ACCPAC has more than 500,000 customers in more than 130 countries.
