Yes you can run both on the same machine. Just not at the same time. They both use the same registry key for registration info. In HKLM\Software\Intuit\QuickBooksRegistration
you will find another key by number for the version you are running, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, etc... After installing one of the versions make a copy of that key and rename it. I prefix it UK, CAN, US, or what ever international version it happens to be. Then install the other version to a different directory than the first installation. Make a copy of that key and rename it prefixing it appropriately. Then when you want to run one of them you'll need to copy the appropriate registration key to be just the numbered key that QB is expecting. For example I have the following keys in my QuickBooksRegistration key "UK 12", "US 12", "CAN 12", and "12". When I want to run the US version I just copy the contents of the key "US 12" to the key "12". This works for the other international versions as well. I also run German, Australian, New Zealand, and South African versions on the same system. If you're switching back and forth pretty often you may want to invest a bit of time and write (or hire someone to write) a small applet to make the registry changes for you.
