The folks at Wellspring are great. Their products are outstanding for checks and any other forms you need to customize for printing.
What you could do is have two check specs - one with the added zero and one without - spec ck-0 and ck-reg, or whatever you want to name them. Then before you print checks, make whichever one active that is needed.
By the way, there are some great deals going on now for those customers still on the DOS program to upgrade to the Windows version.
