Multitasking and the Brain: The War on Productivity
Mounting evidence demonstrates that the human brain isn’t capable of performing multiple simultaneous tasks, and yet more often than not we find ourselves juggling objectives and multitasking in all aspects of life. From glancing over at the inbox status every few minutes to religiously checking Facebook or Twitter, we’re becoming increasingly dependent upon competing attention grabbers. How does this split attention affect performance at work, and what does it say about the next generation of employees? This article will briefly examine what multitasking does to the brain and then suggest a few ways to curtail this productivity-killing phenomenon.

Jason Lawhorn, CPA.CITP, MAcc, is a co-owner of Lawhorn CPA Group, Inc., a full-service accounting and consulting firm in Knoxville, Tenn. Lawhorn and his father, Jeff, recently transitioned and rebranded their firm as a way to widen the firm’s scope of business outside of Knoxville. Jason also heads up the firm’s technology practice.
