Your clients may ask you what responsibility they have in verifying the accuracy of an employee’s W-4. They don’t need, for instance, to confirm their new hire is married. They do, however, need to make sure the form is properly filled out, and that the Social Security number is accurate.
According to the IRS, employers should give their employees a reminder by December 1 if they have the need to make changes to their W-4s (i.e., marital status or number of allowances has changed) before starting the new calendar year.
More than 40 states have a state income tax, and the federal W-4 can often be used to calculate state income tax, however some states have their own form that needs to be filled out.
