I met Jeff Knutson, owner of J. Knutson and Associates the other day. Jeff is convinced that having the best processes in place will keep your contracting business running the way you want it to run. Lets start with Jeff. He graduated college with a degree in law enforcement and had begun an internship in Anoka county, Minnesota. Jeff could have gone on to have a stellar career arresting people like me lets say, (just an example, not a suggestion). While interning, he met someone who got him interested in sales and Jeff, who apparently is not afraid of the unknown moved on to an exciting life of not knowing when or where your next paycheck is coming from, the life of a commissioned salesperson. After being nicely asked to go to work for someone else (twice), Jeff hit the eight ball in the pocket and became a top producer for his employer. Then life and his Joni Knutson turned him around.

J. Knutson & Associates was founded by Joni Knutson in 1984, Jeff came on board in 1987 as a full time sales and marketing person. This turned out to be the key ingredient and the start of a very successful and relevant business. Today, J. Knutson & Associates is one of the largest providers and implementers of construction software in the country representing multiple manufactures of construction software and hardware.

J. Knutson & Associates started representing and implementing Contractors Software Group products in 1997 to fill the void of an easier to use software programs for residential and light commercial contractors. Contractors Software Group had first developed two products; Takeoff Plus and Job Accounting Plus. Jeff explains, “Since we took full ownership in 2000, we’ve expanded the Plus Series product line to include: SalesBuilder Plus, a lead tracking, marketing and customer service solution and Scheduling Plus, a simple scheduling program. Now, we have one of the only fully integrated lead tracking, marketing customer service, lead tracking, estimating, proposal writing, project management, scheduling and job cost accounting programs on the market.

To handle the needs and budgets of smaller builders and contractors we’ve trimmed down our Plus Series and created the Simple Series, which is a fully integrated estimating, proposal writing, scheduling and job cost accounting program for only $1495.00. We’ve developed The Professional Series for larger contractors looking for the same features as the Plus Series but with a bigger engine.”

When I asked Jeff who would benefit from his software and how did it proceed for his clients after purchase he replied that: First you learn the language of the program and after words, with the coaching and support from his firm, you will be proficient enough to pass your knowledge along to others and to your staff.

Jeff believes that any company with $200,000 yearly sales and over will benefit from using their integrated systems and Jeff went on to say that most companies begin to lose control of their business after achieving $500,000 in sales. Jeff isn’t selling software; he’s providing support for your company.
