Getting an application from one accounting vendor to talk to a general ledger application from another vendor may seem like an impossible feat, unless your office was onboard the USS Enterprise, your name was Captain James Tiberius Kirk and you could use the Universal Translator. This was a device that allowed everyone aboard the Enterprise to take in and process a foreign language without having the spoken language sound like unrecognizable gibberish. Expecting a variety of software applications to communicate with each other, regardless of the vendors involved in a language that is understandable by all, is the holy grail of business productivity - and almost as elusive.
