  Captools
Searching for a user of Captools Individual Investor that can help me in efficient use of my investment software.  I was an accomplished user of the old DOS version, but am confounded by the upgraded Windows version.  Would appreciate help or a reference.

Dear C. Smith:
I also have been using Captools Individual since the early days when it was a DOS program.  I made the conversion to Win based years ago and have been a very happy user for a very long time.  I currently use it on my computers, one running Win XP home, the other XP Pro.
Under Windows it is a much more powerful and user friendly program.   Over the years I've created many customized reports that make monitoring my financial life very simple.  You simply have to sit down with the manual that came with the Win version (mine is a paperback with a silver cover) and work through it.  As I recall, the data coversion is automated.  Lots of trial and error involved.  But, once you get everything set up the way you want it, it's a snap.  I last update in the Fall of 2005 and am currently running version 1.75c.
Now for the bad news.  I was looking around their web site the other day, and they have announced several things, all of which are bad for us individual users.  Not only will they no longer support the Individual version, they in fact are abandoning totally the current Windows version with the latest upgrade, which is intended only for pro users.  The cheapest version I can find on their web site has a license fee of $1000 per year.  So, we are stuck with the most recent version.
Frankly, I've found over the years that each time I tried their newest upgrade via download, all it did was screw up my reports that I had worked so hard to format just the way I wanted.  So, here is my advice:
Go to their web site ASAP while you can still download the most recent upgrade available and save it on your hard drive for possible future use.  Then, master the current version you have.  Then, in the future, as you upgrade to newer computers running Vista, think about keeping one of your old computers running Win XP around just for running Captools.  They don't guarantee that the current version that we have will run on Vista, and I think the only way to know will be to eventually try running it under Vista and see what happens.
If you can stand being depressed, head over to their web site to see for yourself.  They've essentially told us undividual users to go screw ourselves.  I emailed them, including the company owner, and got that message loud and clear.
But, the upside is that once you master the Win version that you have, you will love it.  My accountant want to pay me to teach his other clients how to use it.  Tax time is a breeze for me.
All the best
Stewart

Dear Magic1357,

I have tried installing Captools on my mother's brand new machine which is running Windows Vista 64 bit. I built the pc my self, it's running on a core 2duo E8400, so it definitely meets the requirements for this software. The problem is that I read somewhere you have to get IIS 7.0 on Vista 64 to see 32 bit extensions, there's a few steps I have taken but can't seem to do the last step which is to make a change to "ADSUTIL.VBS"  By any chance have you come across this article -

http://www.captools.com/ctnet/help/index.html?ms_windows_64_bit_os.htm

"The only precondition for this functionality is that the 64-bit version of the Internet Information Service (IIS) must be configured to run 32-bit DLL type programs.  The Captools/net Server Control Panel will normally run a VB script to perform this necessary configuration when you first install Captools/net."

1.) Open Windows command prompt. (Start | Run and type "cmd" and hit enter)

2.) At the prompt type :  "CSCRIPT %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Inetpub\AdminScripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1"  (without quotes)

3.) Hit enter

4.) Type "iisreset" and hit enter.

5.) Reboot machine. This is not required but is recommended.  THE PROBLEM is that I don't have adsutil.vbs and googling left me to dead ends. I can opt to install a virtual machine inside Vista 64 that is running XP Pro but that wouldn't be fun now would it?  If you have any idea how to get past this hurdle I surely would appreciate it.  Thanks,

Hi

I am an old version of captools user on windows XP so have not ran accross it.

That said didtyou try the link that captools provided to microsoft  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=b44a0000-acf8-4fa1-affb-40e78d788b00&displayLang=en&oRef

Also did you try the microsoft knowledge data base http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=gp;[ln];gsstopicerror&style=error&errurl=%2fdefault.aspx%3fpr%3dkbhowto and look for the missing file.  It had alot of things that conflicted with it being found.

I also did a google search for cannot find adsutil.vbs vista and seemd to find alot of reference on how to restore lost files yo may  try this again

Hope this helps let me know

Are you still using Captools?  I have been a happy  user until the last month or so when the Yahoo historical quotes stopped downloading.  The problem may be the DATEIN syntax in yahoo.svc.  Any suggestions?
