SAP Expanding Program to Lure Customers
Software Maker SAP Is Expanding Program to Lure Customers From Rival Oracle
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Software maker SAP AG said Wednesday it is extending a program aimed at poaching customers from U.S. rival Oracle Corp., part of tussle between the two biggest players in the business software market.
The Walldorf-based company said it will extend the program -- dubbed Safe Passage -- to small and mid-size enterprises running software from PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards, both of whom were recently acquired by Oracle.
The program provides a conversion credit for up to 75 percent of the original PeopleSoft or J.D. Edwards software licensing fees to be used toward the licensing of the mySAP all-in-one software.
SAP launched the Safe Passage program in January, and earlier this month, Oracle responded to the plan with its own program, called "OFF SAP."
SAP and Oracle are the dominant players in the $24 billion (19.91 billion euro) business-management software market. Both companies have been targeting the retail segment, which is expected to outpace overall industry growth as retailers replace in-house systems.
Shares of SAP were up 2.3 percent to 144.25 euros ($173.88) in afternoon trading in Frankfurt.
On Wednesday, Oracle posted a 3.2 percent increase in profit for fiscal 2005's fourth quarter, beating Wall Street's expectations thanks to strong sales of database software in the United States.
